Kumar Kothapalli, Ph.D., on Genetical issues in Indian Community - Host Srinivas Thirumalsetty

Kumar Kothapalli, Ph.D., is associate professor of pediatrics with a focus on basic research into the medical genetic basis of disease. He is co-discoverer of a genetic polymorphism that controls the body’s synthesis of long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCPUFA) and showed it to be related to ancestral diet, thus defining dietary requirements. He has also co-discovered biochemical pathways for the synthesis of normal LCPUFA and defects in cancers cells that lead to the synthesis of unusual PUFA. His previous work focused on large scale genetic studies of trisomy 21 (Down Syndrome), recurrent pregnancy loss, Sry-negative XX sex reversal and other genetic-based variations that induce special nutritional requirements. Kothapalli trains physicians and postgraduate genetics students to detect and identify human genetic disorders using cytogenetic, biochemical and molecular tools in India. He relocated to Dell Medical School in 2017 after more than 14 years on the faculty of Cornell University.
