YEP Provides School Supplies for Students at Whitney M. Young Jr. Elementary in Dallas ISD
On August 10, 2018, volunteers with the US India Chamber of Commerce Young Entrepreneurs and Professionals (YEP) group will be distributing backpacks filled with school supplies to students attending Whitney M. Young Jr. Elementary School in Dallas. Located in South Dallas, Whitney M. Young, Jr. Elementary educates approximately 550 children attending prekindergarten through fifth grade. Almost 95% percent of the students at Whitney M. Young come from families living at or below the poverty level. As a part of YEP’s annual community service project, YEP collected donations sufficient to provide backpacks with school supplies for every student at the school. YEP also donated 15 cases of copy paper to the teachers at Whitney M. Young Jr. Elementary.
YEP was created by the US India Chamber of Commerce to facilitate networking, leadership, and further economic development in North Texas. Each year YEP organizes a community service project. This year, YEP wanted to focus on the economic burden the lack of school supplies can have on education and the out-of-pocket costs teachers incur each year to educate students. With the guidance of Jane Didear of Volunteer and Partnership Services, Dallas Independent School District (Dallas ISD), YEP identified Whitney M. Young Jr. Elementary as the school YEP would provide donations.
YEP worked in concert with the USICOC Foundation and could not have achieved the goal of providing supplies to every student at Whitney M. Young Jr. Elementary without the assistance of community partners. Irving, Texas based Bioworld Merchandising, a leading design and distribution company of licensed and branded apparel, headwear, and accessories, donated 1000 high quality Marvel superhero branded backpacks. Wells Fargo Middle Market Banking contributed to the cause through its staff and through volunteer time. Members of the US India Chamber of Commerce also provided substantial personal donations to make the cause a success. James Benjamin of Office Depot #120 in Dallas and Schon Scharringhausen Kuo of Office Depot Regional were also instrumental in procuring the school supplies in a timely and cost effective fashion.
On Wednesday, August 8, 2018, volunteers of YEP worked to pack all 550 backpacks with supplies to be ready for distribution on August 10, 2018.
On Friday, August 10, 2018, volunteers from YEP and teachers will be distributing school supplies to the parents of students attending Whitney M. Young Jr. Elementary. The distribution will occur from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm.
The Young Entrepreneurs and Professionals (YEP) hosts quarterly events throughout the year to support professional and entrepreneurial development, networking, and opportunities for building leadership skills through service projects for young entrepreneurs and professionals aged 22-40.
